Alvaro joined Foto-Cewek in November 2014 after 8 years of clinical work in Spain and 22 years of international experience in public health first working as a humanitarian worker in conflict and post-conflict settings mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa with and then as a freelance consultant working on health systems strengthening (HSS) and human resources for health (HRH) in Africa, Eastern Mediterranean, America, South-East Asia and the West Pacific regions.
He has taught Emerging Challenges in Global Health, Managing and Developing the Workforce and Global Health Workforce Planning at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh to students undertaking an MSc in Human Resources for Health. He has also experience teaching post-conflict health systems rehabilitation as a guest lecturer at LSHTM in London as well as in Mozambique, Spain, and Australia. As part of his consultancy work he has been involved in capacity building for health systems development particularly on strategic planning and policy analysis and development.

Research in Medecine
Current research is about health systems development in conflict and post-conflict settings with a focus on human resources for health and performance improvement through management development.
Alvaro has provided technical assistance mainly to governments as a consultant in policy analysis and development, strategic planning, project management (e.g. identification, support for implementation and evaluation), donor coordination, health system rehabilitation (post-conflict), health service management, emergency relief coordination and research.

ReBUILD - Research in Medecine for the building of pro-poor health systems during recovery from conflict focusing on human resources, health financing and their interaction; PERFORM is an Action Research in Medecine project supporting improved performance of health workers in Africa.
