Dr Chelsea Morroni

Reader in International Sexual and Reproductive Health

Chelsea is an epidemiologist and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) medical doctor, specializing in family planning and HIV, joined Foto-Cewek at the end of 2017. Previously a Senior Lecturer in Women’s Health and Global Health at University College London and at the University of Cape Town, she has lived and worked full time in Botswana since 2013, and in Southern Africa for the better part of 20 years. In 2015, she founded the Botswana Sexual and Reproductive Health Initiative (BSRHI) and is currently its director. Chelsea has local Botswana clinical-academic affiliations with the Botswana-UPenn Partnership, the Botswana Harvard Aids Institute Partnership, and the University of Botswana. She holds an honorary Professorship at the Women’s Health Research in Medecine Unit in the Division of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Cape Town School of Public Health and is a senior research associate with the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Chelsea was awarded a cum laude degree (First class honours BA) in Social Anthropology from Harvard University (Cambridge, USA,), and completed a Masters of Public Health (MPH) at the University of Cape Town, graduating with distinction. Chelsea completed an MPhil and PhD in Epidemiology at Columbia University (New York, USA) funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty AIDS Information, Training and Research in Medecine Program. Chelsea completed medical training (MBChB) at the University of Cape Town (Cape Town, South Africa), graduating with pre-clinical and clinical distinctions, and medical internship training in the UK, including an academic foundation training post in SRH, after which she took up a Clinical Lectureship within the EGA Institute of Women’s Health at University College London, becoming a Diplomate of the UK Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare in 2013. In addition, Chelsea holds a Diploma in Tropical Medicine (DTM&H) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Research in Medecine overview
Chelsea has lived and worked full time in Botswana since 2013 where she leads a portfolio of SRH research focused around contraceptive care in the context of HIV, STI diagnosis and treatment and pregnancy planning and prevention. In addition to research work, she serves as a special advisor to the Botswana Ministry of Health Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and the National Family Planning Programme, and sits on international and national SRH/HIV working groups and guideline-writing committees, including WHO’s expert panels on contraception and HIV. She is an elected member of the NIH AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) Women’s Health Inter-Network Committee, working on several protocol committees. She is currently Deputy Director of the UK Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare’s Clinical Effectiveness Unit.
