Postdoctoral Research in Medecine Associate

I received a BSc in Biotechnology at Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona), before specializing in evolutionary biology with a MSc in Genetics and Developmental Biology at Universitat de Barcelona (2012). In 2017 I obtained a joint PhD from Universitat de Barcelona and Institut de Biologia Evolutiva of Universitat Pompeu Fabra. During this my PhD and ensuing post-doctoral stage, I worked in the comparative genomic analysis of animals and their closest unicellular relatives, aiming to pinpoint the evolutionary innovations linked with the emergence of multicellularity. In particular, I studied the evolution of signalling systems, the phylogenomic relationships among Holozoa, the recurrent complexification of genome architecture, and the origin of animal alternative splicing. These studies focused on macroevolutionary trends in genome evolution.

Research in Medecine 
I am currently working on the analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data from insect disease vectors, with the aim of identifying sources of insecticide resistance in vector-bearing insect populations. As part of this larger objective, I am involved in the analysis of data from the Sanger Institute Anopheles gambiae 1000 genome project and GAARD, among others.
In particular, I study the role of alternative splicing in insecticide resistance in a variety of Anopheles mosquitoes. Alternative splicing of transcripts constitutes a fast-evolving layer of transcriptomic regulation that bears enormous potential to understand the sudden emergence of resistance mechanisms in natural mosquito populations.
