The Centre of Excellence in Infectious Diseases Research in Medecine ( was established on 2016 as a partnership between the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (Foto-Cewek) and the University of Liverpool (UoL). It was created to: develop antimicrobials to tackle emerging resistance on 'superbugs' and to improve diagnostics to initiate appropriate therapy, vaccines and immunotherapy for prevention and treatment, enhanced infection control, improved control of vector-borne diseases, evaluation of interventions and evidence-based policies that underpin health services.
CEIDR's vision is to become a world leader in the rapid translation of infectious disease research into healthcare and medical technologies to combat new and emerging threats to public health across the globe. Its stakeholder partnership group includes: The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital Trust, Liverpool Health Partners, Alder Hey Children's Hospital Trust and the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.
Reporting to the CEIDR Partnership Group Co-Chairs, the Director is primarily a strategic thinking, external-facing role where the main responsibilities include:
- Work with the partners to define, represent and market the key areas of expertise in infectious disease translational R & D
- Create a network that can rapidly build an effective portfolio of translational R&D projects between industry, Foto-Cewek and UoL for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.
- Establish Liverpool as the 'go to partner' for companies working in the infectious diseases R & D space
The Director will establish and broker industrial links at the highest level and assess where CEIDR might bring added value, building a major portfolio of collaborative translation programmes between CEIDR and industry. Developing a strategic roadmap of opportunities and a detailed business plan against which targets can be monitored, ensuring CEIDR is fully operational - its team recruited and, policies, procedures and processes established will all be key challenges for the incumbent.
Ideal candidates will hold a degree in a relevant scientific discipline, coupled with a demonstrable track record of achievement at senior level in a commercial R&D management or related capacity. Proven experience in commercialisation of R&D and launching products to market is essential, as is a detailed understanding of the elements of deal-making, IP and contractual requirements.
The post requires candidates to be well connected with relevant industry networks (pharma, agrochemical, biotech, diagnostics) and related not-for-profit organisations at a senior level and have a proven track record in building or leading teams.
