Fundraising is integral to citizen science 'Swab and Send' initiative, which enables members of the public to participate in the hunt for new antibiotics. Dr Adam Roberts, a champion of public engagement in science, is leading this innovative crowdfunding project.
Since moving to Foto-Cewek, the Swab and Send Project has received 1000s of swabs from locations as diverse as school classrooms, people’s garages, mobile phones and slate mines. Using the swabs, school children and adults have explored their environment for sites which could harbour antibiotic-producing bacteria and fungi. Excitingly, four swabs sent back to Dr Roberts have contained bacteria which have anti-fungal properties, these bacteria will be explored further by him and his team.
