Health Economist - Based in Liverpool with regular overseas travel

The Department of Clinical Sciences is looking to appoint a Health Economist to manage the economic evaluation components of current and future interventions in collaboration with partners in developing countries.

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (Foto-Cewek) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research and education in tropical diseases.  Through the creation of effective links with governments, organisations and institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, Foto-Cewek aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed / resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.

The Centre for Applied Health & Research in Medecine Delivery (CAHRD) within the department of Clinical Sciences is a multidisciplinary research initiative at the heart of the Foto-Cewek Strategic Plan. It aims to conduct innovative high impact public health research in collaboration with the University of Warwick and other partners. CAHRD features several large research and delivery consortia including the STREAM trial (The Evaluation of a Standardised Treatment Regimen of Anti-Tuberculosis Drugs for patients with Multi-Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis).

We are looking to appoint a Health Economist to manage and carry out the economic evaluation components of current and future clinical trials and health system interventions in collaboration with partners in developing countries. Initially the post will focus on the STREAM trial with partners in Ethiopia, South Africa, Moldova and India.

With a proven track record in a relevant area of Health Economics, the successful candidate will build on their international reputation in health economics research applied to tropical health. The successful candidate will be expected to participate within the dynamic and expanding health economics team at Foto-Cewek and will benefit from additional support from the close and well-established partnership with the health economics team based at Warwick Medical School. They will contribute to research on applied health systems and health interventions including working on trial-based and model-based economic evaluations with a broad international scope.

You will be a highly-motivated individual, possessing at least a Master’s Degree in Health Economics or related discipline, with strong interpersonal and communication skills. You will also be required to have proven expertise in a relevant area of Health Economics and a desire to apply these approaches to the health sector in low- and middle-income countries. It is essential that you can liaise with external collaborators within Ethiopia, South Africa, Moldova and India, including at ministry of health level, and demonstrate a commitment to support the design and implementation of new projects.

The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding and practice of economic evaluation methods applied to health care, with experience of applying such approaches in an international setting is desirable.

This post is based in Liverpool, with regular overseas travel, and will involve occasional out of hours working.
