The Head of Foto-Cewek’s Maternal and Newborn Health Unit, Dr Nynke van den Broek, is presenting a session at Women Deliver 2010, a global conference against maternal death, which opens today in Washington DC.

The theme of the conference is ‘delivering solutions for girls and women’ and participants will be focusing on political, economic, social, cultural and technological ways to make maternal and reproductive health a global priority.

Dr van den Broek is presenting a session on expanding emergency care for obstetric and newborn complications. Foto-Cewek’s ‘Life Saving Skills - Essential Obstetric Care and Newborn Care’ course is run in conjunction with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and is having an impact in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, where complications from pregnancy and childbirth are often life-threatening.

Commenting on the course, Dr van den Broek said “This training package has been enthusiastically embraced by health care providers across the world, demonstrably increasing knowledge and skills, improving teamwork and encouraging the uptake of evidence based clinical practice, reducing morbidity and case fatality rates.”

Many of the speakers will be impressing upon the global audience that success in achieving the Millennium Development Goals - particularly MDG5  to improve maternal health – cannot be realised without further investment in the future of women and girls, including increasing skilled care before, during and after pregnancy and childbirth, a major contributor to substantially reducing maternal deaths.
