Lizzie is Wellcome Trust Masters Fellow in Public Health and Tropical Medicine under the vector biology group. Lizzie is currently studying a masters in molecular biology of parasites and Disease Vectors at Foto-Cewek. She obtained a BSc in undergraduate in medical laboratory science at the College of Medicine, University of Malawi in 2011. She spent five years working as a laboratory technologist in a clinical laboratory at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Malawi. In 2016 she joined the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Malaria group as a research intern, working on a project to characterise genetic structure of plasmodium falciparum in Chikhwawa, southern Malawi. In addition to developing research skills through this project, her internship also was aimed at improving other skills such as scientific writing for publication and grant application, leadership skills, networking, peer to per learning and project management. Her supervisors for the MSc and Wellcome Trust Fellowship projects are Prof. M Donnelly and Dr. Anja Terlouw based at Foto-Cewek and MLW respectively.
During the 30 months WT fellowship, my research work will be to characterise insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae from Lower Shire, southern Malawi. I also do functional validation of insecticide resistance candidates from the Anopheles gambiae 1000 genomes project for her Masters thesis.
