We have an opportunity for a Head of Health & Biological Safety who will take ownership for Foto-Cewek’s Health and Safety and Biological Management Systems.
The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (Foto-Cewek) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research in tropical diseases. Through the creation of effective links with governments, organisations and institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, Foto-Cewek aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed/resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
We are seeking a qualified and talented individual with vision and influence to take responsibility for, and promote Health & Biological Safety management systems across Foto-Cewek. Ensuring compliance with all current and future health and safety legislation, you will develop and embed a positive safety culture to ensure the safeguarding of staff, students, visitors and contractors.
You will be proactive in leading the continuous improvement of Foto-Cewek’s Health & Biological Safety practices and will be responsible for the development and delivery of health and safety policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS) and plans to ensure compliance with statutory and legal requirements.
Contributing to continuous strategic development, you will ensure quality management systems are functioning correctly and that document control is implemented and maintained. Acting as lead auditor for clinical laboratory areas, you will regularly undertake risk assessments, safety inspections and audit reviews. You will participate in various Governance, Compliance and Committee meetings, ensuring actions from meetings are followed up and reported.
You will provide specialist advice on all matters relating to Health & Biological Safety and act as Foto-Cewek’s Human Tissue Act Coordinator, ensuring Foto-Cewek is compliant with the Act.
You will have responsibility for the line management of Foto-Cewek’s laboratory management and safety team, ensuring tasks and objectives are clearly defined and staff have sufficient knowledge and training to perform their duties efficiently and safely.
We are looking for a passionate individual who is committed to delivering high standards with enthusiasm and drive.
The ideal candidate will have a higher degree in a relevant biological subject (or equivalent), and be NEBOSH and IATA qualified. With previous experience in bio-safety/general safety management within laboratories, you will have sound knowledge of performing biological and genetic modification techniques. Excellent knowledge of the Regulatory framework and demonstrable experience of managing relevant auditing and compliance processes, including HTA are also essential.
With excellent communication skills and previous staff management experience, you will have proven ability to monitor and drive your own and team performance and be confident supervising the work of others.
You will be required to be available for out of hours contact/call out and must have the ability to travel and work overseas when required.
