Women with babies awaiting vaccinations

The stillbirth study aimed to provide deeper understanding of the causes of stillbirth in low- and middle-income countries.

It also looked at means of classifying the causes to inform policy, guide clinical practice and programme implementation. It has highlighted vital priority areas for overall improvement in quality of maternal and newborn care, which is one of the key strategies for reduction of stillbirth in low- and middle-income countries.

The study was conducted in Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone. The data analysis has been completed and the results are under review for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. The study data has already informed the development of a pioneer mobile phone app, which is currently in piloting stage, to help healthcare providers in identifying cause of stillbirth and neonatal death.
