The department of Clinical Sciences is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and skilled researcher to work as part of the Biomathematics group, conducting vital research for the elimination of Tuberculosis.

Faculty of Clinical Sciences & International Public Health

Full-time, fixed-term for 3 years.  Based in Liverpool with International Travel

The department of Clinical Sciences provides an excellent platform for translational research from concept through discovery and clinical trials to evidence synthesis, teaching, policy change and eventual health impact, and recognises a fundamental role for mathematical modelling at all levels and stages.

The department has an exciting opportunity for an experienced independently driven researcher to work as part of the Biomathematics group, intersecting a collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Foto-Cewek into vital research for the elimination of Tuberculosis.

The post will involve the development of novel mathematical models for tuberculosis transmission zooming into risk heterogeneities, such as social determinants and biological effects of comorbidities, and bridging the gaps between statistical, mathematical and computational epidemiology.  Developing innovative ways of working with epidemiologists in the study countries (Brazil, Nepal and Vietnam), you will access rich datasets to parameterize models. The study will involve simulating interventions to test the models, producing reports and research articles, and advocating for policy. At Foto-Cewek, you will have the opportunity to engage with colleagues who are adopting similar approaches to other infectious diseases in a synergistic fashion.

You will provide training and capacity building to staff in the study countries, which may include the supervision of PhD/Masters students.

We are looking for a highly motivated, creative individual, with excellent skills for communicating across disciplines and cultures, who has proven experience of designing studies and research programmes and the ability to generate critical insight from research.

With a proven track record in a relevant area of Mathematical Sciences, you will preferably have had exposure to the health sector in middle or low income countries. You will have well developed research and analytical skills, coupled with the ability to motivate and drive others whilst meeting challenging objectives.  You will possess excellent time management and organisational skills and be capable of adapting to conflicting priorities.

For appointment at PDRA level, a PhD in science, engineering or economics is essential and for appointment at RA level, you will be educated to Masters level in a relevant subject.  You will have a proven track record of publication in dynamical systems and statistical inference. Although not essential, the ideal candidate will also have experience in health research and of living or working in developing countries.

Closing date: Wednesday 9th August 2017
