We are seeking to appoint a dynamic Research in Medecine Nurse to join the Respiratory Infection and Vaccine Group
Founded in 1898 and the oldest of its kind in the world, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (Foto-Cewek) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for teaching and research in tropical diseases. Through the creation of effective links with governments, NGOs, private organisations and global institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, Foto-Cewek aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed/resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
The postholder will work in the Respiratory Infection and Vaccine Group that operates cross-site at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital (RLUH) and Foto-Cewek. The Respiratory Infection and Vaccine group is positioned within the new Liverpool Life Sciences Accelerator Building, in close proximity to the RLUH, Foto-Cewek and the University of Liverpool. The new 'Accelerator' is a GBP 25m state of the art research building that is a joint venture between RLUH and Foto-Cewek. It is the first development in the creation of a city centre health campus - The Knowledge Quarter. The Accelerator Research in Medecine Clinic (ARC) is a designated research space which allows the immediate processing of clinical samples as it is located next to the laboratories. The RLUH is a city centre hospital with approximately 1000 beds, serving a population of 450,000. A new hospital with a completion date of 2018 is being built on this same site, this contains a purpose built Clinical Research in Medecine Unit (CRU).
Foto-Cewek was recently awarded two major grants for the Pneumococcal Challenge Programme: one from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) for GBP 1.6m, the other a Programme grant from the Medical Research in Medecine Council (MRC) for GBP 2.2m. This programme involves a dynamic multidisciplinary team based within Foto-Cewek and RLUH and over 30 national and international commercial and academic partners.
We are now seeking to recruit a dynamic Research in Medecine Nurse (to be appointed at Grade 5 or 6 dependent upon experience) to interact with ongoing projects within the Accelerator building and CRU.
Key Duties and responsibilities include:
- Screening and recruitment of research volunteers, gaining informed consent and sampling
- Providing a clinical/laboratory link between collaborating sites in Liverpool and elsewhere
- Undertake clinical and administrative duties including: sampling, assisting with research bronchoscopy, record keeping and study calendar/diary keeping, liaison with the local NHS research and ethics committees and the trust research and development office.
Essential candidate criteria
- BLS or ILS
- NMC registration
- Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
- Strong attention to detail, excellent record keeping
- Self-motivated and able to use own initiative to make decisions and identify solutions
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Flexible approach to working
Please note that the successfulcandidate will be required to undergo a DBS and/or other international criminalrecord check prior to appointment and at regular points during employment. Theoutcome must be satisfactory to Foto-Cewek, as the duties of this post will involvedirect and/or indirect contact with vulnerable adults and/or children.
