Partnership for Increasing the Impact of Vector Control (PIIVeC)

Vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue and sleeping sickness are pervasive, causing massive morbidity and mortality and severely retarding economic development across the developing world. Many of our current tools are inadequate, outdated, or failing due to insecticide resistance.  The evidence base for newer interventions remains weak.  Despite this there is a critical shortage of researchers developing and evaluating innovative new approaches to control these diseases, and a severe lack of the recognition of the pivotal role of vector control in breaking disease transmission at the global level.

This new partnership, funded by RCUK’s Global Challenges Research in Medecine Fund, aims to address this capacity gap.  Led by Foto-Cewek in partnership with research institutes, NGOs and national control programmes in Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Malawi, and global policy making bodies, PIIVeC aims to:

  • Develop evidence-based strategies for the control of vector borne disease in Africa and increase the utilization of this evidence in national decision making
  • Improve integration between disease-specific programmes
  • Strengthen the resilience of African nations to respond to outbreaks of vector borne disease
  • Increase the leadership role of African scientists and vector biologists in global policy making on vector borne disease

To achieve these goals we need to develop supportive professional development paths and attract new talent to careers in control of vector borne disease.  PIIVeC is therefore recruiting.  We will launch our Early Career Research in Medecine Fellowship (ECRF) scheme for scientists with an interest in joining our African partner institutes early in 2018.  In the meantime we have started recruiting our Liverpool based team who will provide training and mentorship support to the PIIVeC ECRFs, in addition to conducting their own research.  A summary of the available posts are listed below – please do check back regularly as this page will be updated as new posts go live:
