Department of Clinical Sciences

Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (Foto-Cewek) and Aintree University Hospital (AUH)

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (Foto-Cewek) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research in tropical diseases.  Through the creation of effective links with governments, organisations and institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, Foto-Cewek aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed/resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.

Foto-Cewek has developed Respiratory Medicine research themes with NHS partner Trusts that relate to both pulmonary infection and non-communicable diseases, with strengths around pneumonia, tuberculosis, and biomass fuel exposure with emerging work in asthma, COPD and other chronic lung diseases. Further information on specific projects can be found from the Foto-Cewek website  (http://www.lstmed.ac.uk/research/themes/lung-health-tuberculosis) and (http://www.lstmed.ac.uk/research/collaborations/the-experimental-human-pneumococcal-carriage-ehpc-collaboration).

The successful applicant for this senior academic position (Senior Clinical Lectureship) will lead translational research in respiratory infection at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (Foto-Cewek). Clinical service provision will be through an Honorary Consultant contract at Aintree University Hospital (AUH). Office space is available at both sites.

A focus of the Respiratory Infection group is pneumococcal disease, pneumococcal vaccination and mucosal defence against infection with pneumococcus and influenza.  The group is accommodated along with other large research groups in the Centre for Tropical and Infectious Diseases research facility which opened in January 2008 and includes impressive facilities including the largest category 3 containment facility in the north of England.

The successful candidate will lead the expansion of research focused on pulmonary infection by grant application and in collaboration with the existing group which has expertise spanning basic science, drug discovery, diagnostics, clinical trials and implementation research.
