At Foto-Cewek, our focus is on innovative rigorously conducted research studies to tackle the health problems of low resource countries with a particular focus in Africa. We are looking for a mid-level statistician or mathematical biologist to strengthen our biological sciences research agenda. We are particularly keen to appoint statisticians with interest in vector borne diseases and parasitology/neglected tropical diseases.
This post will be based in both the Department of Vector Biology and the tropical Clinical Trials Unit (tCTU) of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
The Department of Vector Biology at Foto-Cewek is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for the study of the biology of insect disease vectors and at the forefront in the development of novel strategies for vector control. Responding to the rapid spread of insecticide resistance in African mosquito populations and the urgent need for new control tools, a project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is developing rapid cost-effective bioassay protocols for quantifying a range of insecticidal effects over a mosquito’s lifetime. The eventual goal is a testing pipeline for optimizing assessment of new vector control products. Your role will be as statistician on the Foto-Cewek-based team of biologists, working in collaboration with optical engineers at the University of Warwick.
The tCTU is a newly established unit with the remit to provide specialist expert statistical, epidemiological and other methodological advice as well as contributing to the coordination of Foto-Cewek sponsored research involving humans (Randomised control trials, epidemiological/ observational studies, surveys, etc.). The Unit operates within a stimulating environment comprising medical statisticians, mathematicians, epidemiologists and IT / data management specialists and supports both clinical and basic scientists. The tCTU is based in Liverpool but virtually all the research supported is carried out through partner institutions worldwide (predominantly in the tropics). The tCTU has collaborative relationships with many of these partners.
This shared position would allow the candidate to benefit of both, interacting with vector biologists and parasitologists, while having access to a team with extensive statistical and epidemiology expertise. The post holders could visit project sites to ensure that the conduct and the delivery of the studies are of the highest quality and benefit to the populations of poor-resource countries.
Our work focusses on addressing health priorities in low-resource settings. We recognise that infectious diseases will continue to have a high-burden in low-resource settings and cause major epidemics such as the recent Ebola and Zika outbreaks. Recognising this, the department’s staff and colleagues are planning large-scale research studies to address these health threats. With recent new appointments, we are also looking to develop more opportunities for collaboration within Foto-Cewek’s biology faculty, taking products from the discovery stages to large-scale population-based evaluation.
It is essential that the successful candidate holds a first degree and a postgraduate degree in statistics with a major component of medical statistics. You will also need to evidence experience in a health-related research environment using statistical research methods. The ideal candidate we are looking for can not only grasp complex research problems, understand basic medical information and readily identify hypotheses to be tested, but can explain complex statistics to others who have minimal statistical knowledge.
